Going to a client’s home that you’ve never seen before can be intimidating because you don’t always know what you’re walking into.
Prepping the client before hand can help you control the situation some. I always advise clients to ‘stage’ the areas that we will be working in which is typically the living room, master, kitchen, and baby room (if child or newborn). This means removing any clutter- even if it’s just piled up in a corner that won’t be pictured;)
Having them turn off all overhead lights and open all curtains before you arrive will also help to have the space prepared for your arrival!
Once you arrive, take a quick peek around to see what you’re working with! I typically ask the client’s for a tour and walk them through my game plan at this time.
Look for where the natural light is coming in from the windows and take note of where you will be placing the clients. It’s important for them to face the windows to get the most flattering light!
Don’t be scared to gently suggest moving a chair or some clutter that you feel will impact the pictures. They will thank you when they see the gorgeous final product!;)
Giving your client a style guide is another super useful tool for preparing for in home sessions! You don’t want formal ball gowns in a cozy lifestyle session… amiright?! My style guide explains matching their wardrobe with the feel of the session which is typically oversized sweaters and basics!
When I prepare my gear for an in home session, I bring my 5D mark IV camera body, 35mm 1.4, 50mm 1.4, flash, and MagMod Bounce.
I feel that the wide angle of a 35mm gives that lifestyle/documentary feel and use that for most of the session but a 50mm will get the job done also!
Natural light is my fave and I will always try to utilize that if possible but sometimes a light flash is necessary on rainy or overcast days! If clients are in a small space and/or have dark colored walls, I will pop the MagMod Bounce on the flash!
I feel that another important component to lifestyle sessions are the little details. I love capturing things that stick out to me that I feel will be treasured later down the road. A coffee cup, a childhood picture, a special book, nursery decor, crib sheets, etc. Lifestyle sessions are all about telling a story and these things contribute to the story!
Be sure to utilize different angles to capture your images in a way that tells a story and creates flattering backgrounds with less distraction!
And remember: YOU are the professional! The client is paying YOU for your time and talent…don’t be afraid to utilize your voice and educate them on what needs to be done for the best pictures 🙂
I hope these tips help take some pressure off your next in home session!
